UNIT 1: Technology and Society

Activity 1: Airbus Report

Airbus is one of the two most important aerospace companies in the world, together with Boeing.

It is a consortium between France, the UK, Germany and Spain dedicated to the design, development and construction of aircraft.

Airbus factories are spread among different parts of Europe. In Spain there are three Airbus factories, and one of those is in Illescas, Toledo.

Illescas factory uses some of the most innovative technologies in the world. Illescas factory is in charge of producing carbon fibre reinforced plastic components for all families of Airbus aircraft, including the horizontal tail plane. The site is equipped with the most advanced systems and processes for the design, manufacturing, inspection and repair of all types of composite material structures.

Moreover, parts of the double-decker Airbus A380, world’s largest passenger aircraft are also manufactured at Airbus Production Site Illescas, which are later transported to Toulouse for final assembly.

In summary, Illescas factory is a very important place for Airbus network as it is in charge of the materials which are used to build the largest, longest-range aircraft in the world.

However, all these activities may create some environmental problems. The production of carbon fiber aviation components may result in factory waste and acoustic pollution. The effect of acoustic pollution might be reduced by isolating the factory. Factory waste is recycled through recycling processes.
