UNIT 3: Technical Materials

INTRODUCTION: Watch this Youtube video (Fiberglass from Airbus by NATGEO) and answer the following questions.

1. Write true or false:

The first material in the Airbus 380 is light weight steel.  False.
b.    Glass becomes a liquid at about 270 º Fahrenheit. True.
c.    Fiber glass is stronger and more flexible than ordinary glass. True.
d.    Fiber glass can be woven like textiles to produce sheets of material.   True.
e.    The window doesn´t break because the individual fibers don´t break. False.
f.    The aluminum provide strength to the composite. False.

2. Fill in the gaps:

The outer skin of the Airbus A380 must be superlight and superstrong.
b.    Fiber glass is about six to ten times the strenght of steel
c.    Liquid resin is added afterwards.
d.    When it dries it sticks the fibers together to create glass in its strongest form.
e.    Fiber glass is even tougher when combined in a composite with aluminium.
f.    Fiber glass provides the strength that aluminium lacks.

3. Answer these questions: In the video the terms “Glass fiber” and “fiber glass” are mentioned: Are they the same thing? What does each term mean?

No, “glass fiber” refers to the material before adding the liquid resin, when it becomes known as “fiber glass”. “Glass fiber” is a material formed by numerous fine fibers of glass. “Fiber glass” is the material that results from the union of a plastic with glass fiber for reinforcement.
